The Playhouse – A Theatregoer’s Guide
The Playhouse Theatre is a West End theatre with 786 seats. It was rebuilt in 1907 and refurbished in 1997. Inside you’ll usually find a standard proscenium arch stage, although the stalls area can be laid out differently. You’ll also see some ornate decorations.
Where is The Playhouse Theatre?
The Playhouse is located right next to Embankment tube station. It’s a short walk down from Charing Cross rail station or just across the bridge from South Bank.
The address is Northumberland Avenue, London WC2N 5DE
Which are the best seats at The Playhouse?
There are three levels- Stalls, Dress Circle and Upper Circle. The latter is usually cheapest but it’s a bit far from the action. I would recommend the Stalls for view and comfort but the Circle is fine. There isn’t a lot of rake in the Stalls but the seats are staggered so you should be able to see between the people in front. Some of the seats to very sides at all levels may have a restricted view. For the best view, I’d sit in the middle of the centre of the Stalls.
How do I buy tickets for The Playhouse?
The theatre is part of the ATG group so you should phone their booking line 0844 871 7631 or visit their website atgtickets.com
INSIDER TIP: If you’re a regular visitor to West End theatres, it’s worth becoming an ATG Theatrecard member. They run a dozen theatres in London and more around the UK. You save money and get free ticket exchange and other benefits.
What are the toilets like?
The facilities are pretty good. According to a survey by The Stage newspaper, it’s the best commercial theatre in the West End for ladies’ toilets (men’s are rarely a problem!).
The bars are small but there are four- the ones serving the stalls are in the foyer and in the basement. The other levels have their own bars.
